If you are looking for information about accounting books, it may help to be a little more specific. Are you referring to textbooks or other books on accounting or are you interested in company’s financial information (often referred to as the “books”). This post will attempt to provide some useful information and provide a review of some of the better accounting books available.
The Accounting Game by Darrell Mullis and Judith Orloff
This accounting book makes the list because of its readability, its practical use, and it shows that accountants can have some personality. This book uses a lemonade stand as the primary business. The reader learns how to make the correct journal entries for this business as it grows increasingly complex. This is a great book for those who are just beginning accounting and want to learn some of the basics of bookkeeping. The one criticism reported on the book is that as the journal entries grow increasingly complex it becomes hard to recall all of the information necessary (from earlier in the book) to make these entries.
Accounting for Dummies by John A. Tracy
The For Dummies series always puts out quality. If you are new to accounting and need to understand the jargon and the basics then this is a great place to start. You will learn what some of those terms are that are used on Wall Street like gross margin, profit, revenues, and expenses. The one real criticism this book has received is that it does not teach double-entry accounting. That means if you are looking to learn how to do bookkeeping, this is not the accounting book for you.
Bookkeeping the Easy Way by Wallace W. Kravitz
Because the accounting books listed above are probably not the best for teaching bookkeeping, I thought I should recommend one that should be excellent for those of you who want to be bookkeepers. With most subjects, you can’t simply pick up a book, start reading it, and then wake up the next day a professional on the subject. This is the case with bookkeeping. You will need to practice and hopefully have someone who knows what they are doing watch and help you out. This book will get you an excellent start however and you should be able to learn how to keep the books much faster after you have read it.
Hope that these accounting books will aid you in your endeavors. Remember that there are a lot of categories within accounting; you could be looking for financial accounting books, managerial, not-for-profit, governmental, etc. Leave a comment below about what type of books you are looking for and any books you think should be added to this page.
