  1. I am currently working as a nurse and would like to be an accountant instead. I was looking at a masters of professional accounting degree and wondering if that would be a good option or if I should look at an undergrad in accounting. Problem is that I have two undergrad degrees already.

  2. Hey Rob,

Tough call there. As always, the answer really depends on where you want to end up. Are you interested in becoming a CPA? Do you just want to do the bookkeeping at a local company?

If you want to become a CPA, then I’d look at all the requirements in your state. Here’s a good place to start. http://www.becker.com/accounting/cpaexamreview/state/. You may not need to go back to get an undergraduate.

If you want to get a job as an accountant at a local company, then go ahead and get the masters degree. It only takes a year or two and companies would be willing to hire you. You’d probably be a great fit as an accountant in a health company because of your background.

    Hope this helps.

    Best,

    Professor Nate

  3. I am trying to find a very simple CPA software accounting program for a small restaurant business. Most of the sites on the web are for large restaurants and full of too much information/marketing to get to the core of what I am searching for. Most also ‘hide’ the cost and request all your contact details. Is there anything simple out there?

  4. Hey Alice,

I would consider just using QuickBooks. There is already a book or two out there about how to use QuickBooks as restaurant accounting software.

  5. I am looking for a software of sanitary ware business.

  6. Hey Rob,

I’m a CPA looking to run payroll for about 20 clients, some of them run restaurants. Does your product offer a console where I could look at all my clients at the same time? Also, is there an easy way where I could mark up the wholesale cost?

  7. Can you recommend a 100% online school to get my associates degree in accounting? I’m driving myself nuts trying to find real information online, every time I search for online degrees I get a list of websites with “fill in the boxes and request info” junk, with ads for the same online schools. Please help! I need 100% online degree program.

  8. I am seeking clarification on the use of temporarily restricted funds (although the treasurer of the congregation has labeled them “restricted”. The congregation raised funds for the purpose of replacing sanctuary seating. Once the goal was reached the order was placed with more funds trickling in. The project has been completed (2 years now). The Church Council wants to move the remainder of the funds designated to “sanctuary seating” for other purposes. Is this permissible?

  9. Hey Mark,

Yeah, that’s definitely a temporarily restricted fund (not sure why the previous treasurer labeled it restricted). A restricted fund is more like a large endowment that can never be touched (only the interest can be used). I’m not sure about the quantities of money you are dealing with here, but what you are proposing seems fine to me (though you should consult with an accountant that is more familiar with your church’s finances).

How’s that for a vague answer?

    Professor Nate

  10. Hey Kathryn,

I can appreciate your frustration. I’m not really high on many of these online schools trying to make a killing at your expense. I have friends that teach at these schools and the teachers aren’t allowed to fail students because the school will lose the revenue. I just heard a horror story about a kid who plagiarized all his work, but the school administration wouldn’t allow the teacher to fail the kid.

Anyways, if you are interested in getting a degree online, I’d try contacting some of your local state colleges. Many of these universities and colleges are offering online degrees.

That being said, try identifying some of the jobs you would like after you finish your schooling. Ask the people who work there if anyone gets hired with a degree from Devry, University of Phoenix, or other online schools. I’m sure a potential employer would be amazed if you contacted them before you even started your education.

    Hope that helps,

    Professor Nate

  11. I am an Accountant . I need a Accounting software for a detergent Agency where many tupes of schemes

  12. Hey Nate,

I’m a History major and certified Social Studies teacher in NYC looking to leave teaching to enter the private sector. I did well in Accounting and enjoyed the class as an undergrad, so I studied the GMAT and applied to several Masters in Accounting programs. But I have a few concerns that I was hoping you could help me out with: I have never done actual accounting work and fear that it may be to dry or may limit what I can do in the business world. I like to interact with people and be creative, and accountants are not known to use these skills. Perhaps an education from a top school will allow me to apply my accounting knowledge to various positions so that I can find a job that fits.

Also, I’m interviewing at University of North Carolina soon. It’s highly ranked but costs a wopping 43K to attend out of state. Is it worth the extra money to go there or would you recommend Baruch, which is 10.5K. Lastly, I may find that an MBA makes more sense, though I feel the need to study a solid skill like accounting. Do you think that Masters in Accounting courses would give me some credit towards an MBA? Also, Baruch is one of the few schools that has an MBA in accounting. So maybe that’s a better idea even though few have heard of the school. What’s your take?

Oh boy, this was a long post and a lot to ask for. Thank you so much for the advice. I’ll be sure to throw in a good word for you if you’re offering CPA prep. Thanks!
