In the past, we have written a lot about inventory tracking software, but today we will talk about inventory databases. Note that most of the software in this category comes with a built-in inventory database.

Most people will not simply want a database for inventory; they will want a package that links inventory information with accounting and other sections of the business. However, there are a few geeks out there who want to create their own system.

Update: After doing some due diligence on the subject we realized that companies can save some money if they create their own inventory management database. This is probably the best idea for companies who are just starting and are in dire need of cash.

Some Options:

Excel – Yes, yes, we realize that Excel is technically not a database and that some of the database gurus who read this article will cringe at the mention of using this dreaded program. However, the truth is that Excel has a lot of functionality and people know how to use it. If your company doesn’t have hundreds or thousands of different products and customers then excel might not be a bad way to go. There are a lot of free templates out there to aid you if you choose this path.

Access – The database gurus are probably still mad at me, but the truth is Access is a database and a lot of companies are using it for inventory purposes. Think of Access as Excel on steroids. Note that if you have never created a database before it will take a little research, study, and practice before you can put one together. This isn’t as simple as opening up a spreadsheet and listing your inventory information.

SAP Inventory Database – Companies that use SAP are usually a little bit larger and need a serious database. They have thousands of products and need a robust, customized system.

Oracle – This is another inventory database software program for large companies, similar to SAP.

There are also some free options out there.

Runningman IT Inventory Database – This software is more for the use of IT managers who are tracking company assets. You can use the software to organize by type of asset, user, and other important characteristics that you want to track. This option might be a good choice if you are looking for something free.

Inflow Inventory also offers a free option. However, it is only free up to 100 customers and 100 inventory products, after that you have to pay.

At the end of the day we don’t really see much of a difference between the myriad inventory software options available and the inventory databases available. For most people we would recommend just buying a normal inventory control package; however for those of you intent on having complete control over your data, the options are listed above.
